Woah, woah, woah, two blog posts back to back? Nadine, what are you doing?
Well, dear friends, we’ve entered a new realm where so many exciting things are happening I can’t possibly constrain them to a single post a week. If you’ve been on Facebook at all, you’ve probably seen this lovely promotion floating around quite often.
Kickstarter. What is it and why is this the only way to pre-order my book?
I know, Kickstarter is different. Some of you may not have heard of it before (fear not, I only learned about it last year.) It might even feel a little…weird. Well, here’s a little run-down for you:
Kickstarter is a platform where you can support creativity in a little way (in this case, through supporting Enclave Publishing’s fall releases) and get a lot in return.
Kickstarter lets you support authors you care about — and their amazing publishing house — at whatever level/amount you’d like to, while getting showered with gifts in return.
Lastly, Kickstarter campaigns are temporary since they provide the backers (aka. you) with enormous benefits. The Enclave campaign will continue only until August 14th.
How does it help you?
- You get to pre-order the books you want. (Yay!)
- You get to purchase these books at a discounted price. For example: A Time to Die in paperback form will probably run somewhere around $15 when it goes up on Amazon. Through Enclave’s Kickstarter Campaign, you can get the e-book and paperback for $15 (value: $21.)
- There is a very high chance that you will get your pre-ordered book earlier than the rest of the world. How can you say no to that? 😉
- If you’re not really into speculative fiction (that science-fiction/fantasy weird stuff) then this is a way for you to support an author you may know (like me!) without having to actually purchase the book. (Although, you should give it a try anyway because you may not know you’re a spec-fic fan at heart until you read it!)
How does it help me?
I’ve had a lot of friends ask me about how my benefits might differ if they purchase my book through the Kickstarter Campaign instead of Amazon. And I want to explain a few things:
- In pre-ordering my book through Kickstarter, you are helping it garner more attention. The more copies of A Time to Die that are pre-ordered, the more potential my book for selling well.
- Kickstarter does not take as high of a percentage out of sales as Amazon does, which means my publisher and me are able to retain a higher percentage of the profit.
- Your attention to my book also boosts the attention shown to Enclave Publishing, my incredible publishing house. And by promoting my publishing house, it’s promoting me!
How does it help Enclave Publishing?
Enclave Publishing, formerly Marcher Lord Press, was just rebranded. I’m excited for this change — I adore the new logo, the vision behind it, and the forward plans for progress, but a rebranding can be like starting new on an old foundation. It takes work. It’s a process.
Kickstarter is catapulting Enclave Publishing into the spotlight to everyone’s advantage. In short, we’re trying to let you pre-order books in a way that benefits both of us the most. The campaign is set up to help “kickstart” Enclave Publishing’s new branding, new books, new covers, new phase in life — New! New! New! — while offering you an brief window into discounts, benefits, and the opportunity to be a backer.
THANK YOU to those of you who have already become backers. We’ve now raised over 130% of our goal with nearly 100 backers! Your support is invaluable and a great encouragement.
That being said, today the Kickstarter campaign will be spotlighting yours truly with a video. Yes, I’ll be on screen…moving like a real person and everything. 😉 I won’t divulge how many takes it took to get one video of me not choking or stumbling over words. But there are some great bloopers (that may or may not become public someday. We’ll see.)
You can watch the video — which can also be called a book trailer of sorts — below!
Any questions about the campaign or pre-ordering?
What do you think about this method of pre-ordering?

Great video! I like the cool Enclave intro and exit, too – that’s neat. I can’t wait to read your book! It’s definitely the e-book I’ll pick for my pre-order. 😀
Me too! It’s so smokey and mysterious. 😉
Thank you for your excitement! (*squeal*) What type of e-reader do you have? Kindle?
I have a Kindle, but honestly I don’t use it very often…I use my iPhone to do most of my reading these days, because I have it with me all the time and you can read in the dark, too. (I have one of the older Kindles – it’s a touchscreen but doesn’t light up.)
Ah, the beauty of an iPhone! I also have an old Kindle. It may have been the first one! It’s not even a touch screen. OR in color. [grin]
Amazing video! You’re so techy!
Haha, thanks Angie! There are about a hundred attempted videos prior to this one. 😉 I’m glad it turned out so good in the end. What fun!
Looking forward to this. (And to the release of John Otte’s finishing book) I like the kickstarter method of preordering. It’s a nice way to get a discount and early copy at the same time, plus being able to get multiple books together at a good price.
Yes! I quite enjoy the Failstate series, too! 🙂 This Kickstarter method is so convenient and, well, great, that I wonder if it will become more common among publishing houses. I’m glad you like it.
I would love to preorder a copy of the book but the Kickstarter campaign says it ships only in the US. Will definitely order a paper copy through Indigo though (in Canada) 🙂
Understandable. Thanks for being so patient! I hope you enjoy it. 🙂
