What’s Your Fandom?

We all have them. Fandoms.

At one point, having a fandom was nerdy and we didn’t speak of such things. But within the past few years being a fangirl (or fanboy) has become . . . COOL. Hm . . . I think I can embrace that. *steps out of closet with a Harry Potter wand and cyborg hand.* And then, when you find someone who shares your same fandom, you’re like:

I thought it’d be fun to talk fandoms a bit. I divulge ALL on my bio page, but who reads those things, right? 😉

My favorite fandoms:

  • Harry Potter – If you know me at ALL, this won’t surprise you. BUT I’M NOT OBSESSED! I’m just a super-nerd. That’s very different. I grew up with these books during my very friendless, nerdy, Jr. High years. 😉
  • Merlin (BBC) – The character of Merlin grows to be such a selfless and sacrificial person. I, just….*hugs Merlin*
  • Lord of the Rings (but I don’t speak Elvish. So…I guess I”m not a true fangirl? I do own little sword-letter-openers, though.) I adore the movies (extended editions, if you please) and am just about to read the books to hubby on our next road trip!
  • The Lunar Chronicles – Cyborgs and fairytales! *squee!* These books are excellent and I want a cyborg foot. That is all.
  • Miyazaki films – Miyazaki is basically the Walt Disney of Japan. The movies are anime-ish, but brilliant and all hand-drawn. If you’re not prepared for them, they come off as really weird. My favorite is Castle in the Sky, to give you a starting point. And Whisper of the Heart.

Oh, and who ever said that fandoms had to be movies or books? FOOD TOTALLY COUNTS. In fact, my friend Katie Grace is the queen of the pizza fandom. And my other friend, Cait (I say “friend” but she’s like, famous, and I just stalk her blog and pretend we’re buddies) is the Ruler of Cake Fandoms. So my food fandoms are:

  • Oreos (regular, if you please. The reduced fat ones are an insult to all desserts everywhere.)
  • Yorkshire tea (this probably should have come before Oreos.)
  • SUSHI! omnomnom My bestie is a sushi chef. I’ve been so spoiled, guys. So spoiled.

Should I even get into video games *cough* Zelda *cough* or comics *cough* MARVEL! *cough* or funko pops?

What makes someone a fangirl/fanboy?

what is your fandomSome would say you have to own cosplay. Or you stalk the author/creators (creepy!). Or you can quote all the lines from the movie. (“Inconceivable!”) Um . . . I can’t do that. I can’t quote, can’t sew, and can’t afford fan paraphernalia, most of the time. Also, hubby and I are moving in to a Tiny House someday (more on that some other time) so. . .no room. 😛 Instead, I clothe myself in KNOWLEDGE. (Also known as trivia-masterness.) I learn things about my fandoms and then chat with other fans. We get geeky.

What is the point of fandoms?

Okay, I admit, in light of eternity fandoms almost seem. . . pointless. This is why I make sure not to obsess over things I like such as Harry Potter. But I enjoy fandoms because I love connecting with other people who might have been affected by these deep life-changing things such as Oreos. 😉 No, but really, I get passionate about Harry Potter and Merlin and Lord of the Rings because I’m passionate about story. And I want to connect with others who share my passions. And that ultimately leads to relationship which is where we can show Christ the most.

A stretch? Maybe. Unless you really decide that everything can be a ministry. Even pizza fandoms. 😛

So now we’ve joined together to geek out . . . or I’ve at least freaked you out enough that you’re tempted to run away screaming. But it’s too late. I snagged you. And all I have to say is. . .

Oreos, Out of Time trilogy, Blades of Acktar(my whole church is a fandom for BoA!), Ilyon, Hunger Games, Marvel, Young Justice…too many to count!

  2. Sword letter openers???? *is very jealous* I actually do know a small bit of Elvish (Mae g’ovannen, mellon nin!), but I have found that it’s a lot of fun to write it, although I have to have a sheet with all the letters on it with me. 😛 I’m a HUGE Avengers fan, which is why I started learning Russian, too… Black Widow! XD

  3. Yes, Katie is TOTALLY queen of the Pizza Fandom. 😀 I am pleased to say I am one of her Pizza Loving Minions. LOL. I have SO MANY fandoms! There are the book fandoms: Out of Time, Ilyon Chronicles, Tales of Goldstone Wood, Rizkaland Legends, and LOTR. And then the movie/TV show fandoms: MARVEL (‘Til the end of the credits!), Doctor Who, Star Wars, Narnia (books too), and Disney. Whew. I have way too many fandoms. Allllllllll the fandoms. LOL.

I still have to read the Lunar Chronicles. Hopefully soon I will join you in that fandom!

  4. Let’s see: Dr. Who (Big time Dr Who), DC Comics, Firefly, Wheel of Time, and the Mistborn Trilogy… Food / Beverage: Dots (The Candy) and High end Specialty Coffee Roast…

  5. I used to genuinely obsessed with LotR when I was a teenager. 😛 I do know some Elvish and my siblings and friends and I used to sing Happy Birthday in Elvish at birthday parties. 😀 (Aur onnad meren na le!)

Back then it was that, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (and other British naval dramas like Horatio Hornblower). Nowadays I’m more of a mellow fan…I enjoy a wide variety of fandoms but am not obsessed with any over all the others. I’d say my favorite fandoms are Doctor Who, Firefly, LotR still, Harry Potter, Marvel movies, Star Wars, Avatar (the animated series), C.S. Lewis (not just one book because I geek out over that man’s whole brain, pretty much…hahaha), H.L. Burke books, The Blood of Kings Trilogy, the Firebird books, Bones (the TV show), and a bunch of other shows and movies and books it would take forever to list. 😀

And I am a gigantic, extremely enthusiastic one-person fandom for my own book. 😀 😀 (Okay, maybe not one-person! I’ve got friends. 😀 )

I also geek out about food. Mainly pasta and sandwiches, but also chocolate peanut butter stuff. And I geek out over deep discussions. 😀

    • I love that you’re a fan of your own book! So many people judge their own words so harshly they barely enjoy their stories anymore! Yet these are the stories God’s given us to change the world. Be proud, honored, and fangirly over the fact you get to be its channel. 🙂

  6. LOTR, Harry Potter, Sherlock, Merlin, Doctor Who, Downton Abbey, and Call the Midwife for movies/TV

Food? Chocolate with raspberries. And pie–especially frozen pie. And basically anything my best friend makes.

  7. Harry Potter, Star Trek & Star Wars (not hugely anymore but the amount of books I have read!), LOTR – but lately my number one fandom has been Asian tv dramas (mostly Korean but I like Japanese and Twdramas, too.)

  8. Oh my goodness, I have a lot of fandoms.

Books: Ilyon, Rizkaland, Counted Worthy (I’ve been dubbed CW’s aunt, hehehe), and The Hunger Games. I’ll probably have more soon.
TV Shows: Person of Interest (I’m SO OBSESSED with it), The Blacklist, Madam Secretary, Once Upon a Time, Doctor Who.
Music: twenty øne piløts and JJ Heller. I literally know every song, fun fact, meaning, etc. I can’t get enough.
Food: PIZZA. OH YEAH BABY. CHOCOLATE. AVOCADO EGGROLLS FROM THE CHEESECAKE FACTORY.
Other: I have a really weird fascination with cities (literally, I browse pics of NYC, Boston, and San Francisco for hours, and set them as my wallpaper) and mountains/waterfalls. I LOVE mountains. My family doesn’t get any of it.

I obsess over things really easily, it’s kinda weird. I just call myself a fangirl and leave it at that.

  9. I have so. many. fandoms. There is so much trivia rolling around in my head, it’s not even good. (And, I can speak a little Elvish, though mostly just insults. Long story.)

I can’t even list them. Well, I won’t list the books, ’cause it’d be too long. But films/shows….

Doctor Who, LotR, The Flash, any MARVEL movie, Batman, Harry Potter, Monk, Psych, etc.

    Well, allons-y!

  10. When I think about the effort I put into learning everything LotR and Chronicles of Narnia as a highschooler, it’s hard to describe anything else as a fandom now!

But, truthfully, I’m a big Firefly fan, Star Wars fan, and Marvel fan. I loved Star Trek growing up, but follow the reboots with less devotion. Hunger Games, Percy Jackson and the Attolia series are some of my most favorite things. And if we’re getting into that sort of thing, I also adore anything my brother writes (original sci fi anyone? https://fromnogrod.wordpress.com)

I really enjoy the stories behind the Assassin’s Creed and the Lara Croft games, also.

With food…probably ice cream! I enjoy making ice cream, and experimenting with new flavors (ginger white chocolate–shockingly tasty).

  11. I can go with the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit fandoms. I also have Doctor Who, Star Wars, Ranger’s Apprentice/Brotherband, aaaand a lot of other stuff.
I’ve heard of BBC Merlin, and I think it sounds really cool, but I’ve never actually seen it. (And the Lunar chronicles are great!)

  12. I’m kinda new to the whole fangirl thingy… I’m not really into a lot of fantasy, scifi and superhero stuff which is mostly what I see people fangirling about. I guess if I had to name some fandoms I’m apart of it would be these (not even sure if any of them officially exist):
Christian Contemporary Music. I mean seriously, I know almost everything about all the singers and their families and I go to as many concerts as I can and try to meet as many bands as I can . I’m actually wearing a tshirt Family force 5, Audio Adrenaline and Citizen Way signed rn
American Ninja Warrior. I MET KEVIN BULL! *quiets down and realizes probably nobody here knows who he is…*
Old TV Shows. I’ve met a few old stars and I recently got anautographed picture of one of the main actors in the 70s show Emergency!
Chocolate. I’m a firm believer in the fact that girls NEED chocolate.
    Anne of Green Gables series
    Pride and Prejudice
Oh, and the Hallmark show Signed, Sealed, Delivered.

Wow. There was more stuff than I thought. That was fun writing all that down. Thanks for this post! Also, if anyone knows about any of the stuff I mentioned or likes any of the same things as me please speak up so I don’t feel alone in this world lol 😉

  13. *happily flails over her own fandoms* Ahhh, let’s see…. I’ve got Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Merlin, Tales of Goldstone Wood — I’m in the Homer fandom, if that’s even a thing — and… Oh! Lord of the Rings! Always Lord of the Rings! And… Oh yeah, I’m in the homemade popcorn fandom, and the chocolate fandom, and the raw dough fandom…. Yeah. Food fandoms are definitely a thing. 😀

  14. Nathan Mileski

I also love Harry Potter, and I am a huge LotR nerd. I sadly know no elvish, though. 🙁 My dad has a sword letter opener. The Door Within Trilogy and all the Rick Riordan stuff is also amazing and fan-worthy. Ooh! And I LOVE Dragons in our Midst, Oracles of Fire, and Children of the Bard!!!
And Zelda?!?! Don’t get me started. Twigliht Princess is my favorite out of all of ’em, and I’m actually playing it for the second time.
And I am a MARVEL fan. I might be considered an expert. Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D, Avengers, comics, anything MARVEL.
    I don’t know about foods… I can’t think of anything. Spagetti maybe.
But I got many fandoms. Fandoms are fun.

  15. Foods: I grealty support chocolate anything and always raw dough (as in brownie, cookie, etc)
Books: (An abbreviated list) LoTR, Narnia, Tales of Goldstone wWod, The Illyon Chronicles, Redwall, Prydain Chronicles.
Movies: I LOVE Miyazaki films and I’m always so happy to meet others who know about them! Also, some Disney. Millennium Actress.
TV: Sherlock, Poldark, Grimm…and I watch a lot of anime with my sister. I love the complex characters and watching things in new languages fascinates me! Favorites would be Hunter x Hunter, Fullmetal Alchmist: Brotherhood, and Gosick. Oh, and my newest fandom is with a French show called Miraculous Ladybug.
Art: Not museum art but other people’s drawings, the kind you find on deviantart or pinterest. I love other people’s art! Especially when they do something with it like comics, animation, or it’s simply their job.
Games: Ib, Wadanohara, To the Moon, Undertale.

I’m in a lot of fandoms but I simply like to go all over the board and always see and experience new things!

  16. I only count myself a fan girl of something if I can write fanfic for it. That’s been Sonic the Hedgehog for many years now. I’ve briefly written for Digimon and World of Warcraft (love the worgen!). While I enjoy Doctor Who, LOTR, and the Marvel films, they’ve never nailed me to the wall the way Sonic did. The only thing that even comes close is the Dresden series. I still feel like those books are an emotional splinter lodged in my heart. 🙂

  17. FANDOMS!! *throws confetti everywhere*
Okay, let’s see what I’ve got:

Food: KING OF SOUR PATCH, Oreos (but then again, who’s not in the Oreo fandom?), and cookie dough.

    Books:
(This is my favorite fandom other than sour patch, so brace yourselves!)

Books (Christian): Out of Time Series, Blades of Acktar, The Wingfeather Saga
Books (Classic): To Kill a Mockingbird, The Count of Monte Christo
Books (Nonfiction): Not a Fan, Unbroken, Seeking Allah Finding Jesus

Movies: *hides face* I… don’t…. really…. like…. movies. *hides face again*. They drain my writerly creativity. But, if I had to choose, I did like The Force Awakens.

Other Random Things with no Category: NINJAS *stealth mode engaged*, big places like the mall and airport

  18. for sure LOTR. I quote it all the time…. maybe to much. They should have an elvish course for people to take. Maze Runner- Thomas Brodie Sangster.
Oreos are amazing. Fried, in a milkshake, dipped in more chocolate. Yum

  19. My fandoms… Uh… Well… Number one is this series called Out of Time… *grin* Have you heard of it?

  20. Let’s see… Lord of the rings, Left Behind series, out of time series, and can I just say that if food counts, I think music should totally count. I am a HUGE fan of Lecrae, Red, Trip Lee, Beethoven (I know I’m weird), Bach, Mozart, George Winston, and on and on and on ?

I love hearing from you!
