By now, you ought to be reading Tricia Mingerink’s new fantasy novel, Dare. Since you are reading it, of course, you’ll be excited to meet Brandi Faythe — the most loveable character from Dare in my opinion. Relation to other characters: Renna’s younger sister
Appearance: Thirteen years old, 5’2” with red-blond hair and blue eyes.
History: She was only nine when her parents died and has been raised by her Uncle Abel and Aunt Mara.
Character: She is bubbly, happy, and a people-person. She has good observation skills and tends to use those skills in her “schemes.” She always means well, but the others in her life are never sure what she might be up to. She has a firm faith and believes unswervingly in God’s power and grace.
Author’s Note: Brandi waltzed on the page and demanded to be written. When I started, I didn’t have much of an idea for her besides the role of Renna’s little sister. Then Brandi came on screen and took over. Most of the time I wasn’t sure what would pop out of her mouth until I wrote it. But that’s what made her so fun to write. When I wasn’t sure where to take a scene, I’d add Brandi into it and see what happened. Some of the best scenes came about that way.
Brandi also got more of an attitude in the later drafts. When I first wrote her, I thought she was about nine years old. Then as she interacted with Leith, I realized that she needed to be older. In the later drafts, I focused on adding her thirteen-year-old attitude into the earlier scenes. She’s still very endearing, and one of my favorite characters. I’m very excited to share the next books in the series where Brandi gets a character arc of her own (and continues to meddle).
First Draft Trivia: Pretty much all of the best scenes with Brandi weren’t planned beforehand. Blizzard’s name, the Daniel stories, and Brandi’s friendship with Leith all just happened during the writing of the first draft. I can’t imagine the book without them!
