National Buy A Book Day (Sep 7th)

Who needs an excuse to buy a book?

Well, today’s your chance. September 7th is National Buy a Book Day! This happens every year to encourage people to support their local bookstores. This is not an anti-ebook or anti-Amazon day. It’s just a day that urges us to enter our local Barnes & Noble, Mardel’s, or Lifeway, and buy a book full price.

National Buy a Book Day was started by NY Times bestselling author, Philip Athans in 2010 and it’s only growing in awareness. Personally, it’s one of my favorite days of the year! Are you going to join in?

National Buy a Book Day

Just one book. It could be a journal, a gift for someone else (early Christmas?), that one book you’ve always wanted, a kid’s book, or even a favorite book you want to donate to your local library!

You can even order them online directly through a bookstore. Need some suggestions? Here are some of my favorite books (with purchase links!) I’d recommend to anyone:

  • dystopian/fairytale: Cinder, by Marissa Meyer
  • Christian romance: A Voice in the Wind, by Francine Rivers (book one in the Mark of the Lion trilogy)
  • non-fiction: Love Does, by Bob Goff
  • more non-fiction: Radical, by David Platt

Last year, I bought Girl of Fire & Thorns by Rae Carson and ended up loving the whole series. On that note, I’m off to Barnes & Noble!

So…what book do you think you’ll buy?

Had you ever heard of National Buy a Book Day before?

  1. I have to agree that I love this “holiday” and think it’s great to encourage people to buy more books! Haha! This year I’m sadly not buying anything in paperback! However I did buy two Kindle books that were on sale! Thanks for sharing the book buying love! 🙂

  2. I just bought Cinder in my Kindle. Thanks for the recommendation! I’m stuck in bed with hip bursitis and needed a good distraction.

  3. I have no local bookstore 🙁 Gotta drive at least half an hour to civilization.

    • Yeah, me too. 🙁 I was going to drive to Barnes & Noble, but it’s an hour and a half away. So I just ordered through their website, which is the closest I can get. Someday, though. Someday I’ll walk into a bookstore on September 7th…

  4. No, I’ve never heard of National Buy a Book Day before (not that I need an excuse to buy a book either). I’ve been hearing good things about Nish Weiseth’s book “Speak: How Your Story Can Change the World.”

    • Did you end up getting it? That title has me hooked already.

      • I walked into the bookstore overwhelmed by the numerous selection of books, and I ended up walking out with “A Liturgy of Grief” by Leslie C. Allen. It may seem like a strange choice, but it seems we, as humans, often don’t handle grief well. And, despite all the laments in the Bible, our churches generally ignore them.

I’m still interested in “Speak.” I agree that it’s an intriguing title. Perhaps next time I’m at a bookstore…

I love hearing from you!
